Spacebuster by Raumlabor

Spacebuster is a mobile inflatable structure — a portable, expandable pavilion — that is designed to transform public spaces of all kinds into points for community gathering. A new iteration of a past Raumlabor project, the Küchenmonument (presented in Europe in 2006–8), the Spacebuster will make its first appearance in the US this evening and will travel throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn for 10 consecutive evenings hosting various community events. 

The pavilion is comprised of an inflatable bubble-like dome that emerges from a step van that also houses the compressor that keeps the Spacebuster inflated. The dome expands and organically adjusts to its surroundings, be it in a field, a wooded park, or below a highway overpass. The material is a translucent plastic that allows the events taking place inside of the shelter — screenings, lectures, dinners or discussions — to be entirely visible from the outside. Likewise the exterior environments become the events’ backdrops. 

Each of these ten evenings will be organized in conjunction with a community group, nonprofit organizations, university, or arts organization. Events will include artist talks, film screenings, communal dinners and many other events.

On a grid of equilateral triangles, we hung a total of 280 glass wind chimes from the ceiling at varying heights to represent the undulation of a wave. When you walk underneath the wind chime, not only does it ring, but its LED also alights like a firefly. The wind chimes nearer to the ceiling ring in higher tones, and those hung lower in lower tones together offering 10 degrees of tonal expression. And it feels as though you are walking inside a large interactive instrument. Additionally, the wind chimes are networked together, so that the sound and light spreads to adjacent wind chimes like ripples in the water. This network system was based on the idea of behavior we observe among certain animals in nature that form groups.

A permanent park for post industrial meditation in Kuramata village, Japan. A cultivated junk yard as a mixture of a temple and machine. Potemkin is blessed and spirituous connected to one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kuramata, Japan.

These Chilean landmark/benchmarks are as much art installation as they are civic architecture. Three architecture students, R.Hernández, M. Valdés, and O. Véliz created these pieces as a means to delineate an ancient path. These modules give visitors a direction, as well as a place to sit. The pieces themselves are all built from small sections of wood, none larger than 16 centimeters.

German designer Marco Hemmerling has created a faceted installation in Cologne, Germany, called Cityscope that reflects fragments of surrounding buildings.

The installation was created for architectural festival Plan08 in September.

At night the reflective, colour-distorting film on its surface becomes transparent and the structure is lit from within.

Cityscope — urban kaleidoscope

The installation „cityscope“ deals with the fragmented perception of urban spaces. The bevelling structure can be seen as an urban kaleidoscope, that reflects fragmented views on the city and composes at the same time a three-dimensional image of the surrounding facades.

While moving around the sculpture the images, that reflect on the triangulated envelope, continuously change. In that way the beholder becomes an integral part of the installation and its complex reflections.

The radiant foil, that is applied to the outer skin of the sculpture reflects, dependent on the daylight situation and the position of the beholder, the light in different colours.

The colour-transformation generates an intentional alienation, that reinforces the idea of a fragmented perception.

Like the facades of a city, the specular envelope becomes transparent in the night, when the installation is illuminated from the inside. The appearance changes in another transformation-process into complementary colours and the inside of the installation can be experienced.

A sophisticated perception of urbanity is often limited to the ground floor level. „cityscope“ tries to open the perspective by concentrating different and unusual views of the urban surroundings. The crystal-like installation is positioned in front of the main station in Cologne, a highly frequented urban square, that allows different angles of vision and supports at the same time the interaction of the beholder with the installation.

The project was designed digitally in 3D from the beginning, using Rhinoceros Software. The final shape is related to the site and reacts to the height and proportions of the surroundings (station, church, dome…). The production of the elements was realized by digital fabrication technology (CAD-CAM) for both the aluminium framework and the synthetic elements of the bevelling skin. The light installation was programmed with different sequences in order to support a dynamic perception of the sculpture by night.

Digital Workflow
The project renounces on the application of a structure in the traditional sense. Instead, the space is filled with a 3-dimensional lightweight-sculpture, solely based on minimal surface tension, freely stretching between wall and ceiling and floor.

The design and fabrication procedure uses state-of-the-art digital workflow; beginning with 3D computer modelling, that is engineered structurally before undergoing a process of computer controlled (CNC) material cutting and mechanical re-seaming.

The computer-model, based on the simulation of complexity in naturally evolving systems, feeds directly into a production-line of sail-making-software and digital manufacturing.

The product shows a new way of digital workflow, enabling the generation of space out of a lightweight material that requires minimal adjustments onsite to achieve a complete installation in an extremely short time.

Sustainability
LAVA’s process of optimized minimal surface design and CNC (computer numeric code) fabrication technology allows the sculpture to reveal a new dimension in sustainable design practice.

Fulfilling the sustainable agenda of the venue, the work succeeds in its quest for optimum efficiency in material usage, construction weight, fabrication and installation time, while at the same time achieving maximum visual impact in the large atrium space.

The pavilion is easily transportable to any place in the world; can be quickly installed, and is fully reusable.

Fabrication
The sculpture materials consist of a double stretch, 2 way woven fabric that is mechanically attached to specially designed aluminium track profiles. Each profile is suspended from above, and to the side, on 2mm stainless steel cabling.

Concept
Since the 1970’s, with Frei Otto’s soap-bubble experiments for the Munich Olympic Stadium, naturally evolving systems have been an intriguing area of design research; something that hasn’t been lost on the team and their fascination with new building typologies and naturally developed structures.

The installation is a ‘Minimal Surface’ that consists of a tensioned Lycra material, digitally patterned and custom-tailored for the space. Five sides of the sculpture reach out to carefully hover just off the main interior atrium of the Customs House above the model of the city.

The lightweight fabric design follows the natural lines, contours and surface-tension of the fabric. The curves can be seen as the result of invisible bubbles that are translated into an organic 3-dimensional space.

While appearing solid, the structure is soft and flexible and creates highly unusual spaces within customs house, which come to life with projection and lighting.

Rising up to the top level restaurant, a vertical distance of almost 20m, the sculpture provides an intense visual contrast to the beautifully restored heritage interior of Customs House.

The Customs House ‘Media Wall’ is also activated with content detailing the process of design, engineering, fabrication and installation of the sculpture along with the impressive, recent design projects completed by LAVA across 12 video screens.

The whole installation is immersed in a soundscape by sound artist David Chesworth and graphic design by TOKO, and includes the latest 3D works by visual artist Peter Murphy.

Lighting designer Bruce Munro will present his Field of Light installation at the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, this winter.

The installation, consisting of 6,000 acrylic tubes containing optical fibres, is inspired by the way the desert flowers after a rainstorm.

a reactive floorprojection for a recoil performance group dance performance/installation. developed with choreographer tina tarpgaard and programmer jonas jongejan. the installation was part of a larger installation and moern dance performance by tim rushton, danish dance theatre called labyrint. we used processing for the infrared blobtracking of the dancers and drawing the open gl graphics. during the performance tina controlled the whole thing live from an isadora-based interface via osc.
